Heavy-Duty Gouges – Sweep #5 for Controlled Material Removal
Large-scale carving often requires more cutting power than hand pressure alone can provide. When you are roughing out a sculpture, leveling the background of a deep relief, or shaping a large wooden form, the tool needs to remove material efficiently without leaving unnecessarily deep tracks behind.
STRYI Heavy-Duty Gouges – Sweep #5 are designed for exactly this balance of power and control.
The shallow Sweep #5 curvature removes broad, clean shavings while producing a gentler hollow than deeper Sweep #7, #8 or #9 gouges. This makes it especially useful when the surface needs to remain relatively open and smooth while still following a curved form.
The current STRYI Heavy-Duty #5 is specifically positioned for large-scale sculpting, relief carving, furniture work and demanding woodworking, with a geometry designed for mallet-assisted carving.
What Is Sweep #5 Best For?
Sweep #5 sits between a flat chisel and the deeper carving gouges.
It has enough curvature to follow and create gentle concave surfaces, but it does not cut the pronounced channel produced by a deeper sweep.
This makes it particularly useful for:
- roughing large sculptures while maintaining relatively smooth surfaces;
- leveling relief backgrounds;
- shaping broad, shallow recesses;
- modeling soft organic forms and transitions;
- carving folds, contours and rounded surfaces;
- removing stock from furniture and architectural details;
- refining large areas after more aggressive roughing;
- creating shallow concave surfaces without deep tool tracks.
STRYI also uses Sweep #5 in its professional relief-carving systems specifically for background leveling and modeling soft, organic contours.
Sweep #5 vs. Deeper Sculpture Gouges
Choosing the sweep is really choosing the depth of curvature.
Sweep #5 – shallow curvature for broad cuts, background work and smooth transitions.
Sweep #7 – deeper and more versatile for stronger concave forms and general sculptural shaping.
Sweep #8 – increased curvature for deeper modeling and more pronounced hollows.
Sweep #9 – deep semicircular profile for strong concave cuts and aggressive hollowing.
On the current STRYI size guide, Sweep #1 represents a flat edge, Sweep #9 a semicircular edge, with #5, #7 and #8 providing progressively deeper intermediate curves.
That makes Sweep #5 a strong choice when you need to remove a lot of wood without digging an unnecessarily deep channel into the surface.
Built for Heavy-Duty Sculpture Work
This is not simply an oversized standard carving gouge.
The current STRYI Heavy-Duty Sweep #5 is built as a dedicated heavy-duty sculpting gouge with a substantial working section, long handle and reinforced handle construction for demanding carving.
Current specifications include:
- W1-7 high-carbon spring steel;
- 60–62 HRC hardness;
- 3 mm metal thickness;
- long Ukrainian oak handle finished with linseed oil;
- reinforced ferrules;
- professional hand sharpening;
- construction intended for mallet-assisted sculpture work.
These specifications allow the tool to remain stable during stronger cuts while still providing the edge control needed for surface refinement.
Why a Shallow Sweep Works So Well on Large Surfaces
The flatter the sweep, the broader the contact area between the edge and the wood.
With a deep gouge, the center of the cutting edge enters the material much farther than the sides. That is useful for hollowing, but on broad sculptural surfaces it can leave deep channels that then have to be removed.
Sweep #5 behaves differently.
Its shallower curve allows you to take wide, controlled shavings and gradually establish the final surface. That can reduce the amount of correction required before moving to finer carving tools or surface finishing.
For large sculpture, this makes Sweep #5 particularly useful between two stages:
heavy roughing → Sweep #5 surface modeling → finer finishing
Choosing the Right Width
Blade width determines how much surface the gouge covers with each pass.
A narrower Sweep #5 gouge gives more control around smaller curves, transitions and individual details.
A wider Sweep #5 gouge removes material faster across broad backgrounds, large sculptural surfaces and architectural elements.
For large work, width should therefore be selected according to the scale of the form rather than simply choosing the largest available tool.
Narrower width = more localized control.
Wider width = faster coverage of large surfaces.
Designed for Mallet-Assisted Carving
Heavy-duty gouges are built for situations where hand pressure alone is inefficient.
Controlled strikes from a carving mallet provide the additional force needed to remove material from large blanks and dense wood while allowing the carver to guide the direction of the cut.
STRYI's own guidance recommends mallet use specifically with tools designed for heavy-duty work rather than applying this technique indiscriminately to ordinary carving chisels.
For this category, a suitable leather, rubber, polyurethane or wooden carving mallet is the appropriate companion.
Sharp and Ready to Carve
Power alone does not produce a clean surface.
A heavy sculpture gouge still needs a properly prepared cutting edge. If the edge is dull, more mallet force is required and the tool is more likely to crush or tear fibers rather than slice them.
Current STRYI Heavy-Duty Sweep #5 gouges are professionally hand-sharpened for soft and hardwood, so the tool arrives ready for carving.
Regular stropping helps maintain that edge between full sharpening sessions and preserves the original Sweep #5 geometry.
Made in Ukraine, Shipped Worldwide
STRYI Heavy-Duty Sweep #5 Gouges are made in Ukraine for sculptors, woodcarvers and professional woodworking shops around the world.
Whether you are blocking out a large wooden figure, leveling a deep relief background or shaping broad organic forms, Sweep #5 gives you the combination of efficient stock removal and surface control that deeper gouges cannot provide in the same way.
