Bent Gouges — #5 Profile

A tool for smooth, gradual shaping

In wood carving, the shape of the blade decides how comfortably you can work a given spot. Deep hollows call for one profile, flat surfaces for another — and for soft transitions and shallow relief, a gentle #5 sweep is exactly what you want. That's the job of the #5 bent gouge.

What sets it apart is the geometry of the working end. The #5 profile has a shallow, gentle sweep, so the cutting edge lifts wood from the surface without changing its shape abruptly. It's the tool to reach for when you need to form a clean, shallow scoop, work the transition between relief levels, or give a detail rounded contours.

Where a #5 bent gouge is used

Its main home is artistic and sculptural wood carving. It handles concave areas, shallow hollows and smooth relief, and works well on decorative panels, furniture elements, small sculptures and other pieces with a complex surface.

The flat sweep is just as useful for modelling individual details. Use it to refine a contour, remove surplus wood between elements of a composition, or ease the step from a raised part down to the base plane. Unlike a tool with a deeper sweep, the #5 bent gouge lets you work more gently and change the shape of the blank a little at a time.

When choosing one, think about the work ahead. In practice, these matter most:

  • width of the cutting edge — it sets the size of the area you can work;
  • depth and shape of the profile — they define the kind of scoop you get;
  • steel quality — good steel holds an edge far longer;
  • handle comfort — it decides how well you control the tool over a long session.

A narrow edge suits local work and small details; a wider one lets you cover open areas faster.

How to work with a #5 bent gouge

Clamp the blank securely, then set the boundaries of the area you'll work. If you need to change the relief to any real depth, take the wood down in several passes — that keeps the form under control and lets you stop the moment the surface reaches the shape you're after.

Choose your cutting direction to suit the grain. On tricky textures, make a test pass first to see how the wood responds; if chips appear, ease off the depth and adjust your direction. Take particular care next to relief you've already finished.

The #5 profile is ideal for final shaping. Once the bulk of the waste is gone, use the #5 bent gouge to level transitions and remove small irregularities. Here a keen edge really counts: a well-honed tool takes light passes without extra pressure and lets you feel the surface better.

Afterwards, clear the wood dust and check the edge. Regular honing keeps the cut consistent, and careful storage protects the edge from accidental knocks. Looked after well, the gouge stays an easy, low-effort tool at the bench.

At STAMESKI you'll find professional tools for every kind of wood carving, including #5 profile bent gouges. It's a useful addition to any carver's kit for working concave areas, building relief and finishing complex wooden surfaces with care.
