We Started With a Need, Not a Product Line

STRYI began in 2009 with a young family, a small garage, a few old motors and a simple question: could a disappearing toolmaking craft be rebuilt? The First Tool Was Never Meant …

Years earlier, Yuriy's uncle had made wood carving tools by hand and earned the trust of local carvers. After he passed away, people continued contacting the family because they still needed those tools and could not find a direct replacement.

There was no factory to inherit, no complete production system and no technical manual explaining every step. What remained were fragments of earlier work, a few machines and a community of woodcarvers still looking for tools they could rely on. The First Tool Was Never Meant …

That became the starting point for STRYI.

Learning Toolmaking From the Beginning

Yuriy had not previously manufactured carving tools.

He began learning the process from the ground up: how steel responds to heat, how hardness and tempering affect performance, how profiles and bevels change the cut, and why a tool that looks correct may still behave poorly in wood.

The garage became both workshop and testing ground.

One profile would be changed. A bevel would be reconsidered. A bend would be adjusted. The tool would be tested again.

At the same time, Liubov worked on the other half of the challenge: finding the woodcarvers who needed these tools, understanding what they were looking for and creating a way for them to reach a small workshop in Stryi. The First Tool Was Never Meant …

Those two responsibilities — making the tool and listening to the person who uses it — have remained connected ever since.

The First STRYI Tools Were Not Made to Be Sold

Before asking anyone to buy a STRYI tool, we gave the first tools to woodcarvers and asked them to work with them.

We wanted practical answers.

Was the profile correct for the cut?

Did the blade enter and leave the wood cleanly?

Was the geometry comfortable?

Could the tool be controlled precisely?

Did the edge hold?

The tools returned with comments and suggestions. Profiles changed. Geometry was refined. Sharpening was reconsidered. Dimensions were adjusted, and the process started again. The First Tool Was Never Meant …

That feedback loop became one of the foundations of STRYI.

The woodcarver came first. The tool followed.

“Can You Make This?”

As more carvers began using the tools, they stopped asking only for standard chisels.

They began bringing specific problems.

A different width. A deeper sweep. A longer blade. A stronger bend. A profile capable of reaching a difficult part of a bowl or relief. Sometimes they needed a tool that did not exist in a standard catalog at all. The First Tool Was Never Meant …

Instead of beginning with:

“This is what we manufacture.”

STRYI learned to begin with:

“What are you trying to carve?”

Some requests resulted in one custom tool. Others revealed a need shared by many carvers and eventually became part of the wider range.

That is why the STRYI assortment developed around real carving tasks rather than around the convenience of producing only a few standardized profiles.

Before STRYI Was a Brand, It Was a Recommendation

The name STRYI was not created first and marketed afterward.

Local carvers simply began referring to the tools by where they came from:

“Stryi chisels.”

They recommended them to other woodcarvers, and the name traveled from one workshop to another.

Long before STRYI was formally registered as a trademark, the name had already become associated with carving tools from Stryi. Before STRYI Became a Brand, It…

When the time eventually came to register the brand, there was little need to invent a new name.

The name already existed in conversations between woodcarvers. Before STRYI Became a Brand, It…

STRYI was not created to manufacture an identity around the tools.

The identity grew out of the tools themselves.

From a Garage in Ukraine to Carvers Around the World

The first advertising was equally simple.

Liubov printed small notices and placed them around Stryi with a telephone number and one message: wood carving tools were being made in Stryi again.

People called.

Later came the first laptop, the internet, online communities and requests from outside Ukraine. Within the first six months, international inquiries had already begun arriving. The First Tool Was Never Meant … The First Tool Was Never Meant …

Today, STRYI tools are used by woodcarvers in 87+ countries, and the company has developed hundreds of profiles for different carving techniques and applications while keeping production rooted in Stryi, Ukraine. The First Tool Was Never Meant …

The workshop is very different from the garage where the first experiments took place.

The principle behind the work is not.

Made for the Work

A sculptor removing large amounts of hardwood does not need the same tool geometry as someone hollowing a spoon.

A relief carver works differently from a bowl carver.

A beginner may value stability and predictability, while an experienced professional may need one very specific profile for a repeated operation.

STRYI grew around the idea that the tool should serve the carver, not the convenience of the production line. The First Tool Was Never Meant …

That means paying attention to profile, geometry, sharpening, balance and how the tool actually behaves when its cutting edge reaches wood.

A STRYI tool has to earn its place at the workbench.

What Has Never Changed

STRYI is no longer two people experimenting in a garage.

But the same questions still guide the work:

What does the woodcarver need?

How will this profile actually be used?

Can the geometry be improved?

Does the tool arrive ready for the work it was designed to do?

Feedback from beginners, hobby carvers and professionals still matters because every one of them experiences the tool where it matters most — at the cutting edge. The First Tool Was Never Meant …

Before STRYI built a catalog, it listened to woodcarvers.

Before it built a brand, carvers were already recommending its tools.

And before the first tool was sold, someone was asked to test it and say what could be made better. The First Tool Was Never Meant …
