Most beginners stand in front of a new lathe with the same question: which tools do I actually need? Buy one random chisel and you end up with a half-turned blank and no way to finish it. The STRYI Start set answers that question for you. It’s four essential wood lathe tools in one 20 mm format, chosen so you can take a square blank all the way to a smooth, finished piece.
The roughing gouge turns a square blank into a clean cylinder in minutes and takes the scariest part of turning off your plate. Once the blank is round, the spindle gouge with its swept-back tip shapes beads, coves and curves. The flat scraper smooths surfaces and evens out small marks, which is where beginners gain confidence fastest. The 45° skew chisel gives you the clean, glassy cut and sharp details that make a piece look professional rather than homemade.
All four chisels have long oak handles with copper ferrules. The length gives you leverage against the tool rest, so the cut stays steady and your hands stay relaxed instead of fighting vibration. The blades are [high-carbon steel, 62 HRC], hardened to take a keen edge and keep it through long turning sessions. Each chisel is sharpened before it leaves the workshop, so your first evening at the lathe goes into turning, not grinding.
Most importantly, all four tools share one 20 mm size and one handle shape. You learn one grip, one stance and one feel, and then just switch the tool for the next stage of the job.
You don’t need a wall of chisels to make your first beautiful piece. You need the right four. Add the STRYI Start Wood Turning Tools Set to your cart and take your first blank from rough to round to finished this week.
Keep your edges keen: lathe tools cut cleanest when they’re honed regularly. Our leather honing wheels bring back a razor edge in seconds, so you strop instead of grinding away steel.
Ready for the next step? As your skills grow, add bowl gouges, parting tools and specialty profiles from our full range of wood turning chisels.
I’ve never turned before. Is this set really enough to start?
Yes. These four tools cover the full basic cycle: roughing, shaping, smoothing and finishing cuts. Most beginner projects, like handles, rolling pins, candle holders and pens, can be made from start to finish with this set alone.
Why 20 mm for all four tools?
20 mm is a versatile, forgiving size for small and medium lathes. It’s big enough to remove wood quickly and small enough to keep good control in detail work. One size also means one grip to learn, so you progress faster.
Isn’t the skew chisel too hard for a beginner?
The skew has a reputation, but it’s the tool that gives the cleanest surface straight off the cut. Start with light passes, keep the bevel rubbing and cut with the lower half of the edge. The flat scraper in the set is your safety net while you learn.
Can I turn bowls with this set?
This is a spindle turning set, where the wood grain runs along the lathe bed. Never use the roughing gouge on bowls or faceplate work, because it can catch dangerously. For bowls, add a dedicated bowl gouge from our wood turning tools range.
How do I keep the tools sharp?
Hone them often and grind them rarely. A few seconds on a leather honing wheel restores the edge between cuts. Go back to the grinder only when the edge is chipped or the bevel needs reshaping.
